Workshop 'High Definition filming for Technical Diving'
by EuroTek Presenter Doug Friday

speaker profile>>
Based upon the recent filming of the 08 Cocklebiddy Cave Exploration, this workshop is intended to guide current and future users of High Definition Video through the minefield of operating this technology within the realms of technical diving.
Cocklebiddy Cave (see cocklebiddy presentation info here) represented a number of challenges for the film maker including complex lighting requirements, site logistics and filming 6.5km within a cave system. As part of the workshop never before seen footage of the back of Cocklebiddy Cave will be shown to illustrate the technical content of the workshop.
Video technology has moved on significantly in the last few years with the advent of High Definition Video. As good as this new technology is, it is built upon a foundation of compromises and limitations. Camera manufactures have developed solutions to help overcome some of these shortfalls, but place the camera in the marine environment, especially within wrecks and caves, then the cameras are often pushed to the outer edge of their operating envelopes.

This workshop will discuss the various High Definition format systems, their limitations and how they can be overcome in the realms of the technical diver.

If you want to understand what interlaced, progressive, HDV, ADVC, DVC PROHD, interframe rate, intraframe rate, colour space, 1080i and 720p is all about and what impact these systems have on your underwater film then come along.

The workshop will also discuss what camera settings to use, how to configure lighting, how to make wreck and cave films interesting and considerations for scootering.

With a number of practical examples and footage, the workshop will address how to configure the camera system, selection of diving equipment, in-water safety

during deep dives and how camera operations can be integrated with rebreather technology. The presentation will also briefly touch on camera and housing selection for those interested in moving into this technology.

Following an overview of the filming issues for technical diving, the workshop will discuss the overall requirements of total system integration including the selection of editing system and computer requirements to enable the best overall results.

Following the workshop discussions a short extract of the Cocklebiddy Cave Film – ‘Beyond Toad’ – Extending Cocklebiddy Cave. This will include never before seen footage of the back of Cocklebiddy Cave – be one of the first to witness this extraordinary film.
