EuroTek.08 Speaker Dr Simon
Mitchell (
Dr Mitchells EuroTek presentation Information)
At Oztek 2007 people were turned away from Dr Mitchells presentations
simply because there was not enough room for everyone who
wanted to see him speak. Simon is one of the southern hemisheres
leading speakers in the field scientific diving physology
amied at deep Techincal divers.
Simon Mitchell began diving in 1972 at the age of 14. His
diving career has subsequently included more than 6000 dives
spanning many disciplines including sport, scientific, commercial,
and military diving. In recent years his diving interests
have focussed on photography and visiting deep wrecks using
a Mk15.5 closed circuit rebreather. Simon maintains this active
participation in deep diving first, because he loves it and
second, because he believes that comprehensive understanding
of the process and complete credibility with other divers
in his educational interactions requires such participation.
Over recent years he has been a lead member of teams that
were the first to dive and identify 3 deep wrecks of high
historical significance in Australia and New Zealand. At the
time of one of these dives (2002) the 180m depth represented
the deepest wreck dive to date.

Simon changed career paths from marine biology
to medicine in the 1980s, completing his medical degree, post
graduate Diplomas in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine and Occupational
Medicine, a PhD in which he researched embolic brain injury,
and most recently, his specialist qualifications in anaesthesiology.
He trained in diving medicine with the Royal New Zealand Navy
between 1992 and 1998, and then spent 4 years in Brisbane, Australia
as medical director of the Wesley Centre for Hyperbaric Medicine.
Over this period he treated over 400 cases of decompression
sickness. He was a foundation recipient of Certification in
Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine from the Australian and New Zealand
College of Anaesthetists in 2003.
Simon has more than 45 papers in the international medical literature,
and recently co-authored the second edition of “Deeper
into Diving” with John Lippmann. He has 2 chapters on
decompression sickness in the most recent edition of Bennett
and Elliott and has been invited to author a new chapter on
technical diving for the next edition of this text. |
|
| He has chapters in up-coming technical diving texts
by both Tom Mount and Kevin Gurr. He is Vice President
of the USA-based Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society,
and is currently Chairman of the Society’s Diving
Committee. |
