John Lamb

Abuse of Oxygen Sensor by divers (workshop)
“Examining the myths and misunderstandings of Oxygen sensors”

By Eurotek presenter John Lamb

Since its introduction into recreational diving in the early 1990's the oxygen sensor has been continually misunderstood, misrepresented and has become surrounded by myths especially on bulletin boards. The publishing of “ Oxygen Measurement for Divers “ in 1999 was intended
to address the misconceptions developing through the 90's and enable any diver from the sports diver upwards to gain a basic understanding.

At the 2008 conference John spoke about the myths and the distribution of erroneous information that continues to be passed on .

His 2008 workshop addressed the basic fundamental properties of oxygen sensors, such as pressure, temperature, moisture, quality control, manufacturing, batch problems and records/traceability.

The 2010 workshop will cover, specifically, abuse of Oxygen sensors by divers. There will be ample time to put questions to a person who has lived with and solved problems with oxygen sensors in the diving and medical environments for 40 years. John will show how a sensor is built and how every component can be diver abused.this presentation will be a bit more technical than the 2008 presentation but will have plenty of simple diagrams that divers should be able to understand and follow. At the last show John concentrated on the myths surrounding sensors so this time he thought discussing how divers actually and probably unwittingly abuse them may be interesting.
The actual content, what a sensor is, how it works, and how it dies does not change will also be covered.
John Lamb Profile

John having studied Applied physics and electronics began a career in Medical instrumentation in the early 1960's. In the late sixties he was involved in the introduction of micro-fuel cells now, known as oxygen sensors into the critical areas of medicine. Having formed his own medical company Viamed Ltd in 1977 he continued with oxygen monitoring as a main product line becoming the master distributor world-wide excluding North America for Teledyne sensors and products in Medical, automotive, and diving.

Being an active diver since 1988, with the introduction of mixed gases he formed Vandagraph Ltd.(1993) as an offshoot company specifically

focused on the recreational diving industry. Vandagraph supplies Teledyne oxygen sensors to several re-breather manufacturers and has concentrated exclusively on the manufacture and distribution of gas measurement products priding itself on reliable service and technical support.

At EuroTek Johns company Vandagraph have kindly donated an brand new analyser to win at the Charity Draw as well as one of the books of Oxygen Measurement.
