Graf Zeppelin 'Nazi Aircraft Carrier' expedition 2009
'The end of the legend'
by Tomasz Stachura
|
The German 2nd WW aircraft carrier GRAF ZEPPELIN, has in recent years
aroused the imagination of many European divers. Many people have
heard about it, but nobody had an idea where exactly it had sunk.
 |
The war ship from its beginning had tangled history.
It's build had never been quite finished and the ship had never
been on active duty. At the end of the war the Germans estimated
the state of its completion of around 85%.After the war ship
was handed over to Russians as spoils of war the Russians took
from the ship everything they wanted. And then...nothing is
sure and that's how the legend of Graf Zeppelin emerged.
Reportedly, the Russians used it as a barge to transport all
the possible goods to ST Petersburg. It has also been stated
that there are more secrets which intrigues divers to investigate. |
| In recent times a research vessel named the ST.Barbara discovered
the whereabouts of this 260 meters long aircraft carrier at
the depth of 86 meters in the middle of the Baltic Sea. |
The divers of Polish Navy re
portably dived on it a few weeks later.
The first 'civilian' expedition took place in 2009, and then
because of long distance to port and great depth within the
Baltic Sea only a few dives took place on the wreck.
Tomek Stachura during his presentation at Eurotek will tell
us about the end of the legend of Graf Zeppelin and about
the diving on what is undoubtedly the biggest wreck of the
Baltic Sea. See for the first time still images and video
footage taken at depth in the freezing Baltic Sea.
