'Deep
Wrecks of the North Channel'
by EuroTek Presenters
Mark Dixon & Jeff Cornish
speaker profiles |
 |
| Between Ireland and Scotland lies a notorious stretch of water
known as the North Channel in which lie a several notable ocean
liners in depths of 100m plus. For the last nine years a group
of British deep wreck divers known as the ‘Dark Star’
have travelled to the Channel to explore these wrecks. |
The Andania pictured alongside a dreadnought
battleship now lies at 115m depth in the North Channel |
The team is headed up by Mark Dixon and along
with Jeff Cornish Mark will talk about the exploration of wrecks
such as the Tuscania the Andania and further a field into the
western approaches to wrecks such as the Transylvania and the
Amazon.
The divers have been exploring these wrecks over the years aboard
the dive vessels Gemini Storm & Loyal Mediator with now
retired Captain George Mair, and now their own vessel appropriately
named ‘Dark Star’. |
| Mark and Jeff will discuss the logistics of diving these wrecks
including the planning and the safety specific to each wrecks
locations. The diving of the Andania was planned two years before
the team actually descended to the wreck. One of the reasons
it took so long to make their first dive to this wreck was because
of the unknown tidal complications due to its location in the
narrowest point of the North Channel between the over-falls
located off Rathlin Island and the Mull of Kintyre. |
With only certain tides of the year that the wreck
can be dived and decompression times off a depth of 115m depth
that can take the divers some five miles distance the Andania
is perhaps the most extreme wreck dive in the British Isles.
Along with video footage and stills of some of these awesome
huge deep liners Mark & Jeff will deliver a presentation
that will be of interest to all wreck divers. The main wreck
of exploration over the years for the team has been the Tuscania
which is perhaps one of the best wreck dives in British Waters
not to mention one of the best kept secrets.

In recent years the team have hooked up with pioneering
Irish divers to explore wrecks such as the Andania and share
information, although stand out themselves as one of the original
groups of divers who were all capable of diving well beyond
100m in British Conditions.
