EuroTek 2008 Technical Innovation
Award
An award for Technical Innovation
An Advanced or Technical Diving Innovation that has enabled
you to further your diving or made your diving safer
The winner of the 2008 'Technical
Innovation award' went to Martin Parker and
Ambient Pressure diving for the Inspiration and Evolution Closed
Circuit Rebreathers.
As with all of the prestigious EuroTek Tek diving awards;
the Award for Technical Innovation had been voted for by the
delegates of Eurotek, however this more than any other category
saw an almost unanimous decision.
The equipment and principles have been around for years,
even pre-dating the aqualung, however it took advances
in technology and manufacturing techniques married with
a company headed by an open minded and forward thinking
Managing Director to make the product of Inspiration rebreather
commercially viable to the masses. Previously divers literally
took their lives in their hands as they built and tested
their home built variants of rebreather equipment.
With a proven track record, backed up by solid scientific
data, there is no doubt the Inspiration rebreather has
more dive time than any of it’s contemporaries and
no doubt enabled many divers to achieve a string records
which has over the past decade advanced exploration in
huge leaps.
No single item of diving equipment had polarised the diving
community in such a dramatic way. There are those that believe
there is no place in recreational diving for such an insidious
devices such as CCR's and the discipline required to use this
equipment that they say is inherently dangerous and irresponsible.
Despite this and facing sometimes strong criticism the Inspiration
continued to gain a dedicated following and with the manufacturers
support, several high profile Expeditions had realised their
goals previously thought logistically out of reach could be
achieved; With the Inspiration he Closed Circuit Rebreather
had arrived.
Described by many as the most significant advance in SCUBA
diving since invention of the Aqualung by Cousteau in the
‘50s the Eurotek 2008 award for Technical Diving Innovation
went to Martin Parker of APD for the Inspiration and Evolution
Closed Circuit Rebreather.
